Importance of "Attitude"

Posted by Patrick Manyanza on Jun 4 2012

Attitude is an inward feeling, that’s expressed by outward behavior. Attitude can also be defined as the composite of an individual’s thoughts, feelings and actions. Attitude is therefore about, how a person is and that overflows into how he acts. If you study the lives of many successful people to determine what qualities made them successful, it will be clear to you that they all have strong attitudinal qualities. Many people have well developed skills, but their attitude hinders them from successfully talking on great opportunities.

Our attitude is therefore the primary force that will determine whether we succeed or fail. This simple but important knowledge seems to be absent in our educational systems and as a result, most people are hindered from moving forward towards higher and more significant achievements. Good attitudes among a team do not guarantee a team’s success, but bad attitudes guarantee its failure. Attitude is contagious; in fact, the one thing that’s more contagious than a good attitude is a bad attitude.

Attitude is a product of belief. Our beliefs determine how we see ourselves and how we perceive the world. French philosopher Francois Voltaire likened life to a game of cards. Each player must accept the cards dealt to him. But once the cards are in the hand, he alone decides how to play them to win the game. The late Helen Keller, an author and a lecturer, impacted millions of people despite being deaf and blind. Helen Keller didn’t view herself as a handicapped, she saw herself as a world changer and it is this attitude that made the impact. Helen Keller played her cards well without a doubt.

Our attitude can therefore give us an uncommon positive perspective which is a key ingredient in achieving some uncommon goals. Something to remember is that, individuals whose attitudes cause them to approach life from an entirely positive perspective despite their circumstances are not always understood. However, in the end they are almost always inevitably respected. Attitude is truly what gives a winner his edge.

Usually, a person who rises within an organization has a good attitude. The promotions did not give that individual an outstanding attitude, but an outstanding attitude resulted in the promotions. I understand the difficulties and frustrations people may face in the workplace due to lack of proper leadership and management, however, it is always important to see ourselves beyond our current employment. Our success is determined by the vision we have in our mind, for this reason we shouldn’t let our current circumstances hold us back from future opportunities. When our attitude is right, the world makes room for us to see opportunities where we couldn’t see them before. There is very little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative.
