Personal mastery for success

Posted by Patrick Manyanza on Jul 15 2013

Success is something we all would like to have and experience. Success is also different to many people but to sum it up in a definition, I like the way Earl Nightingale put it when he said, "Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal." Now, in order to move in the direction of your worthy ideal, it's imperative for you to become the person that takes the necessary actions on a consistent basis. In other words, in order to have and experience the success you want, you have to first master yourself inside.

Personal Mastery is really the idea of becoming the person you need to become in order to have the success you so desire. To succeed in life you have to be growth conscious and not just simply goal conscious. If you focus on reaching your goals, you may hit them but that does not guarantee growth. On the other hand if you focus on the activities that stretch you and grow you to become a better you, you will then always hit your goals.

"People are often anxious to improve their circumstances but unwilling to improve themselves; they therefore remain bound." - James Allen

To become growth conscious and progress towards the life you want, you have to be very intentional in how you choose to live your life. Something that has personally helped me a lot is living by the mantra of plan-do-review. I make a plan, I work the plan, I review the results, I then make a better plan and continue this process. Living intentionally with the perspective of taking better actions will heavily contribute towards growing and developing you to become better and much more results-oriented person.

If you want your life to improve, then you must improve yourself. The decision to intentionally grow can impact you more than any other decision. What stops people from growing is mostly fear of making mistakes. You therefore have to overcome any fear of making mistakes. After all a mistake is simply another way of doing things. Expect to make mistakes from time to time, and welcome them as a sign that you are moving in the right direction. A strong fact is that we cannot change our destination overnight, but we can change our direction overnight.
